According to the latest data from the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, the death toll in Tajikistan’s mudslides has reached 9.

As of the morning of May 12, torrential rain on May 11 caused mudslides and floods in at least fifteen districts in Khatlon province, central Tajikistan and the Rasht Valley (eastern Tajikistan).

Umeda Yusufi, a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, told Asia-Plus Wednesday (May 12) afternoon that the country’s rescuer services found the body of the 75-year-old woman in the Vakhsh district of the Khatlon province Wednesday morning.

“She was swept away by a mudslide,” Yusufi said.

Thus, the death toll in May 11 mudslides has reached 9.

Recall, the Emergencies Committee said Tuesday (May 11) evening that three persons were killed by mudslides in the city of Kulob and three others were killed by mudslides in the Shmasiddin-Shohin district (Khalton province).

Besides, one more person was killed by mudslide in the Hisor district, and a mudslide that occurred in Ergash village of the Bustonqala jamoat in the Kushonioyon district of the Khatlon province on May 11 killed a local resident.

According to the latest data from the Emergencies Committee, heavy rains also caused a series of mudslides in Sangvor and Rasht districts (Rasht Valley in eastern Tajikistan), in Varzob district as well as in  Khuroson, Dousti, Muminobod, Yovon and Danghara districts of the Khatlon province, damaging fields and roads.  Fortunately no human casualties were reported.

The Emergencies Committee warns that risk of further mudslides, floods and rockfalls remains high until May 14.
