Tajik leader to pay an official visit to Pakistan

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon will pay an official visit to Pakistan from December 14-15.

The Tajik president’s official website says that while in Islamabad, Emomali Rahmon will meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and some other high-ranking Pakistani state officials.

The parties will discuss state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan.

In particular, they will discuss investments in Tajikistan’s energy, transportation, cultural and some other sectors, an official source within the president’s press service told Asia-Plus in an interview.  

The parties will also exchange views on a number of international and reginal issues being of mutual interest, including the situation in Afghanistan.  

The previous visit of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, accompanied with a large delegation of ministers, businessmen and senior officials, to Pakistan took place from June 2-3, 2021.  The two countries share common views on major regional and international issues and cooperate closely at various multilateral fora.  A number of MoUs in the fields of academic, commerce and industry, financial control, art and culture and international road transport were signed.  A joint declaration on next steps in building strategic partnership for regional solidarity and integration was also signed.

President Rahmon has visited Pakistan eight times since 1994.  In the multilateral context, Emomali Rahmon visited Pakistan for the 13th ECO Summit held in Islamabad in March 2017.
