The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Indigo Tajikistan Closed Joint Stock Company (Tcell) have signed a US$30 million equivalent local currency financing agreement to modernize and expand mobile connectivity across Tajikistan, according to press release issued by the ADB Tajikistan Resident Mission (TJRM). This agreement marks ADB's first nonsovereign loan in the country.
In a statement, Ko Sakamoto, ADB’s Country Director for Tajikistan, highlighted the project as a significant step in the partnership between the bank and the country. "This project represents a major milestone in our collaboration with Tajikistan. It demonstrates ADB's commitment to supporting the development of the private sector in the country," said Sakamoto. "By working with Tcell, we are not only enhancing connectivity through improved telecommunication infrastructure but also creating jobs and expanding access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and digital services."
The Tcell Mobile Network Expansion Project aims to improve the quality and accessibility of mobile services throughout Tajikistan, particularly in rural areas where more than 70% of the population resides. The initiative will also include the installation of energy-efficient technologies to promote sustainability.
