“The work of enemies”: Chinese ambassador discusses attacks on Chinese citizens with Taliban officials

Date:

Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Zhao Xing met with Mohammad Naeem Wardak, the Taliban government's Deputy Foreign Minister for Finance and Administration, to discuss recent attacks on Chinese nationals in Tajikistan’s border regions, launched from Afghan territory. The meeting was reported by Afghan media, including 8 Subh Daily.

During the meeting, Wardak expressed regret over the incidents and confirmed that the Taliban had launched an investigation. He described the attacks as the work of enemies aiming to create mistrust between China and Afghanistan.

Khaama Press news agency reports that Ambassador Zhao welcomed the Taliban’s serious stance and efforts in response to the incident. He stressed that the perpetrators were attempting to undermine the friendly relations between the two nations.

The discussion follows reports of two cross-border attacks that left five Chinese citizens dead and five others injured in Tajikistan, near the Afghan border.

As it had been reported earlier, the Chinese Embassy in Dushanbe on December 1 issued an urgent appeal for Chinese nationals and companies to evacuate areas near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border following two violent armed attacks. It also advised Chinese nationals in other parts of Tajikistan to avoid traveling to the affected areas and to take all necessary safety precautions.

Chinese Ambassador to Tajikistan Guo Zhijun held urgent talks with Tajik officials. According to the embassy readout, both sides discussed the safety of Chinese nationals and enterprises in the region. Ambassador Guo urged the Tajik government to take all necessary measures to safeguard Chinese interests.

In response, Tajik authorities strongly condemned the attack and pledged to bolster security efforts, vowing to protect Chinese citizens and businesses.
