KHUJAND, July 1, 2010, Asia-Plus — Three women from Sughd province have got jail terms for buying and selling of newborn.

The Khujand city court yesterday ruled that 38-year-old Munavvar Khilvatova (the mother of the newborn), 35-year-old Mayram Ahmadova (who was going to buy the baby) and 42-year-old Muattar Sharipova (cleaner at the Sughd regional maternity house) be given a jail term of three years each.  They will serve their terms in a high-security penal colony.

The source at the Khujand court says Khilvatova, who already has two children, gave birth to a son on January 22, 2010.  “Her husband died and she is bringing up two children alone, and therefore, she decided to sell the newborn and Muattar Sharipova found childless family.  On January 26, they sold the newborn to Mayram Ahmadova for 800 somoni,” the source noted.
