DUSHANBE, April 19, 2010, Asia-Plus — On Friday April 16, the Academy of Science of Tajikistan hosted a meeting dedicated to the “Day of Science” marked under the motto “2010 Is the Year of Science and Innovation in the CIS Countries”, with participation of around 100 academicians, scientists, representatives of different national agencies and ministries.
At the event the Regional Coordinator of the Swiss Disaster Risk Reduction Program for Central Asia, Ms. Annemarie Schneider, handed the signed Agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) on donation of seven broad band digital seismic stations to the Academy of Science, to the President of the Academy.
Mr. Imomberdi Berdov, Disaster Risk Reduction Programme Assistant, Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan, said the hand-over component had been stipulated in the Swiss-funded project “Rehabilitation of Seismic Monitoring Network in Tajikistan”, which was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Seismologic Service of the Republic of Tajikistan in order to contribute to risk and disaster management through seismic monitoring and provision of disaster related information for national and international stakeholders.
The President of the Tajik Academy of Science, Academician Ilolov highly appraised the cooperation between Tajikistan and Switzerland in general, and expressed his confidence that fruitful collaboration between the two countries will get much closer in the long run.
In his speech on “the present-say seismic monitoring network in Tajikistan”, Director of the Geophysical Survey, Academician Nematullaev concluded: “This initiative allowed the seismological science not only to overcome degradation experienced during the last few years but to even bring it up to a higher level”.
Ms. Annemarie Schneider, in her address to the audience, highlighted the importance of science in disaster prevention and the importance of sharing knowledge, techniques, experience and data not only throughout the country but as well as in the Central Asian region, “I’m glad to see the Academy looking forward to further develop the seismic survey in order to prevent disasters, and thereby contributing to a safer life of the people of Tajikistan”, she concluded.
