KHUJAND, March 12, 2010, Asia-Plus — The first session of the Sughd regional council (Majlis) of the fourth convocation took place in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province on March 11.
63 members of the council took part the session that was also attended by chairmen of cities and districts of the region, chiefs of local law enforcement agencies and heads of regional organizations and enterprises.
The council nominated Sughd governor Qohir Rasoulzoda as candidate for the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) and considered a number of organizational issues.
We will recall that the Sughd regional council has 70 seats and 132 candidates competed for seats in the Sughd Majlis. To-date, the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT) has got 62 seats, the Communist Party (CPT) – 2 seats, the Agrarian Party (APT) – one seat, and two seats have been won by unaffiliated persons, while voting will be re-run in three constituencies.
