President Rahmon congratulates his Pakistani counterpart on Pakistan’s national holiday

DUSHANBE, August 14, 2009, Asia-Plus  — On Friday August 14, President Emomali Rahmon sent a telegram of congratulations to his Pakistani counterpart, President Asif Ali Zardari, on occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day, according to presidential press service.

In his message, Rahmon, in particular, noted that bilateral relations between Tajikistan and Pakistan have been developing successfully in recent years.  He also expressed hope that a recent visit of President Zardari to Tajikistan will play an important role in further expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan’s Independence Day is observed on August 14, the day on which Pakistan became independent from British rule within then what was known as the British Raj in 1947.  The day is a national holiday in Pakistan.   The day is celebrated all over the country with flag raising ceremonies, tributes to the national heroes and fireworks taking place in the capital, Islamabad.  The main celebrations take place in Islamabad, where the President and Prime Minister raise the national flag at the Presidential and Parliament buildings and deliver speeches that are televised live. In the speech, the leaders highlight the achievements of the government, goals set for the future.
