DUSHANBE, February 23, 2012, Asia-Plus  — So far, some 100 people have been released from the snow captivity of the Anzob Pass, some 80 kilometers northwest of Dushanbe, Orif Nozimov, a spokesman for the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), told Asia-Plus Thursday afternoon.

According to him, some 100 other people still remain trapped by avalanche and the CES rescue teams are expected to complete an operation on evacuation of them from the Anzob Pass today.

We will recall that a series of avalanches left more than 200 people trapped for almost two days before emergency service teams rescued them.

Meanwhile, Anzob and Shahriston passes in Sughd province and the Khoburabot Pass in Gorno Badakhshan are still closed for traffic.

Nozimov noted that recent avalanches had caused serious damage to the yak-breeding farm named after Asliddinov in the Ayni district.  12 yaks were reportedly trapped under a heavy snow.

“Heavy snowfalls have also caused damage to the Sari Khosor jamoat in Khatlon’s Baljuvon district; five residential buildings were partially damaged by a heavy snow in Sari Khosor,” said the CES spokesman.  “A heavy snow has also damaged two schools in the Vakhsh district, Khatlon province”

As a result of natural disaster that hit Tajikistan this year, one person has been killed and dozens of residential buildings have been destroyed to the extent of being unsuitable for living for their more than 100 inhabitants.
