DUSHANBE, July 18, 2012, Asia-Plus — On Tuesday July 17, President Emomali Rahmon received Mrs. Alice Wells, Senior Director for Russian and Eurasian Affairs, the United States National Security Council.
According to the president’s official website, issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States, first of all in the fields of security and defense, were the focus of the meeting.
Tajik president, in particular, noted that Tajikistan considered the United States as one of its strategic partners on international arena and was interested in further expansion cooperation with that country.
In the course of the talks, the two also discussed cooperation in providing regional security after withdrawal of the ISAF forces from Afghanistan in 2014.
Mrs. Wells reportedly appreciated Tajikistan’s support for reestablishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Noting the geostrategic location of Tajikistan in the region, she stressed that the United States would increase technical assistance to border guards and other relevant structures of Tajikistan to strengthen border control and management of the tajik-Afghan border.
Rahmon and Wells also discussed issues related to providing regional security, development of constructive relations between the countries of Central Asia and South Asia, development of civil society in Tajikistan, the source said.
