Over 239 kilos of narcotics seized in Sughd province this year

KHUJAND, August 7, 2012, Asia-Plus  — The law-enforcement authorities in the northern Sughd province have reportedly seized more than 239 kilograms of narcotics in the first seven months of this year, which is 107 kilograms fewer than in the same period last year (In January-July of 2011, local law enforcement authorities seized 346 kilograms of narcotics).

The amount of narcotics seized in January-June this year has included more than 61 kilograms of heroin, a source at the Drug Control Agency (DCA)’s office in Sughd told Asia-Plus Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, police have reportedly accounted for more than 50 percent of the total amount of drugs seized in the area over the first seven months of this year.

According to the Sughd police directorate, police officers have seized 158.031 kilograms of narcotics over the same seven-month period, which is 145 kilograms fewer than in January-July last year (In January-July of 2011, Sughd police seized 303.465 kilograms of narcotics).  A totaled included more than 24 kilograms of heroin, nine kilograms of raw opium and more than 124 kilograms of hashish, the source said.
