KHUJAND, September 3, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Diabetes shows an upward tendency in the northern Sughd province, Ms. Farosat Nabiyeva, head physician, Sughd regional Endocrinology Center, told Asia-Plus on Wednesday.

According to her, the number of diabetics has increased in the province especially over the past three year.

“In 2006, 4,100 diabetics were registered in northern Tajikistan.  In 2007, their number increased to 4,328, with 594 of them, including children under the age of 14, being insulin-depended,” the head physician said, noting that 130 new cases of diabetes detected in the province this year brought the number of diabetics in Sughd to 4,458.

“In April 2006, the government issued a resolution on developing the national program on combating diabetes for 2006-2010,” said Nabiyeva, “Under this resolution we should distribute medicines to diabetes sufferers free of charge.  The regional administration has helped us build new building with 50 beds at the Center.”  “Treatment for diabetes is expensive, and therefore, we are forced to apply to international organizations for help.  On August 27, we received an annual stock of medicines for diabetics through the HOPE Project.”
