DUSHANBE, October 15, 2008, Asia-Plus — Speaking to reporters on October 14 in Dushanbe, Mahmadamin Mahmadaminov, the head of Tajikistan’s savings bank, Amonatbonk, said that as legal successor of the branch of savings bank of the Soviet Union in Tajikistan, Amonatbonk is ready to repay debts to the country’s residents.
However, two monetary reforms held in the country led to devaluation of people’s savings. Thus, person who had 5,000 rubles on his deposit account will receive only 5 diram (0.05 somoni).
Mahmadaminov noted that residents might apply to the bank but the amount will be, unfortunately, negligibly small.
According to him, a total amount of the bank’s debts to residents of the former Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic is 800,000 somoni.
We will recall that during the period of state sovereignty in Tajikistan, monetary reforms were held two times. In 1995 there was a necessity to bring national currency in, as the Russian monetary unit spread over the country brought many problems: it was impossible to convert pay-sheets to CIS countries, the gap between cash and cashless currency also took place and many other problems. But the main reason of bringing in national currency was the formation and functioning credit-monetary policy of Tajikistan.
The Tajik ruble was the currency of Tajikistan between May 10, 1995 and October 29, 2000. It was subdivided into 100 tanga, although no coins or banknotes were issued denominated in tanga.
The second monetary reform was held in October 2000. The somoni was introduced as the national currency of Tajikistan
. It is subdivided into 100 diram. The somoni was introduced on October 30, 2000, replacing he Tajik ruble at the rate of 1 somoni=1000 rubles.
