As it had been reported earlier, one entrepreneur, two borer guards and one police officer were detained last October in GBAO’s Ishkashim district on suspicion of having been involved in tobacco goods smuggling.

According to the GBAO anticorruption directorate chief Yusuf Nazarshoyev, they are charged with smuggling more than 500,000 somoni worth of tobacco goods out of neighboring Afghanistan.

“Officer from the Ishkashim police department Abdumamad Nazarmamadov was fined 5,000 somoni; the sentence followed his conviction on charge of illegally crossing border and abusing his position.  Entrepreneur Khairddin Ismoilov was fined 30,000 somoni, while border guards Ghulom Qodirov and Ghairat Allayev were put on probation for one year each.  The border guards were convicted on charge of complicity in contraband.” the source said.

In the meantime, the Khorog military court has considered five criminal cases over the first quarter of this year.  Five servicemen have been convicted on charges of dodging military service and abusing their positions.  They have been fined and put on probation for one to two years.  Besides, one draftee has got a jail term of 8 months for voluntary absence.
