On July 24, during a special meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed Deputy Prime Minister Rashid Meredov to recruit international experts – qualified lawyers to examine the legality of Azerbaijan”s claims for disputed offshore fields in the Caspian Sea.

The point is about disputed oil and gas fields “Omar” and “Osman”, as well as Azerbaijan”s claims for “Serdar” field, previously known as “Interim”. Apart from that, the legality of participation of foreign oil companies in the exploration and development of disputed territories will be considered. All the documents will be forwarded to the International Court of Arbitration.

“The search and development of mutually acceptable solutions in this area is to the great extent constrained by a special position of Azerbaijan who unilaterally started the development of disputed oil fields,” Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.

According to the president, “the normative documents that date back to the Soviet Union time, which were approved by the relevant ministries and agencies, clearly say that these deposits are located within the territory of Turkmenistan, and unambiguously belong to Turkmenistan.”
