DUSHANBE, August 5, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Canada’s Tethys Petroleum (Tethys) has begun drilling an exploratory hole at the Komsolskoye gas field near Dushanbe.

An official ceremony of the beginning of work was held today and it was attended by Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov and Dr David Robson, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tethys.

According to Dr. Robson, the exploratory drilling is expected to be finished in two months.  “If the drilling results are positive for us, we will begin drilling the second hole,” said the Tethys CEO.  “We hope the first hole will start giving gas by winter.”

The Tethys top manger noted that according to independent companies’ estimates, the eastern part of the Komsomolskoye field has possible gas reserves of up to 2 billion cubic meters.  “It is not much; however, it is enough to provide the Dushanbe population with natural gas,” said Dr. Robson.  “I think the Dushanbe population will not have problems with natural gas any more in the near future.”

Canada”s Tethys Petroleum Limited (Tethys), an independent upstream energy firm with a focus on Central Asia, is currently working on partially tackling problems of oil and natural-gas supplies to Tajikistan during the winter months.
