DUSHANBE, April 21, 2010, Asia-Plus — The number of TB infection cases is continuing to increase in Tajikistan.

Speaking at a news conference on sidelines of the 3rd Central Asian Forum on infectious diseases and drug use in prison settings, the Deputy Health Minister, Azamjon Mirzoyev, revealed on April 21 that 1,264 new cases of tuberculosis have been detected in the country over the first three months of this year, which is 244 cases more than in January-March 2009.  In January-March 2009, 1020 new TB cases were detected in Tajikistan.

In the meantime, Bahrom Abdulhaqov, the deputy head of the penal department within the Ministry of Justice, noted that 800 TB-infected prison inmates have been officially registered in Tajikistan.   

A total number of TB sufferers in Tajikistan is now more than 15,000 people.
