DUSHANBE, July 3, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has congratulated Roza Otunbayeva on approval her powers as Kyrgyzstan’s interim president, according to Tajik presidential press service.

A telegram of congratulations sent by President Rahmon to Roza Otunbayeva on July 2, in particular, said, “We remain staunch supporters of good neighborly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation with Kyrgyzstan and express hope that further stabilization of the situation in fraternal Kyrgyzstan, return of the ongoing processes in the country into the legal space, the reign of law and order will give us an opportunity for further development and expansion of our relations.”

President Rahmon also wished success, peace and well being to the Kyrgyz people.

We will recall that Kyrgyzstan conducted constitutional referendum on June 27.  Kyrgyz officials say some 90 percent of participants approved the constitution, paving the way for the first parliamentary democracy in Central Asia and allowing parliamentary elections scheduled for October.  The new constitution considerably reduces presidential powers.  Tajikistan welcomed Kyrgyzstan”s referendum results and Tajik FMA said that Dushanbe would work with any government the people of Kyrgyzstan choose for themselves.  

Roza Otunbayeva was sworn in as Kyrgyzstan”s interim president on July 3 at an inauguration ceremony.  She took her oath of office at a Bishkek concert hall before a packed audience of government officials, diplomats, and politicians.  According to the decree, Roza Otunbayeva will remain in office until December 31, 2011, at the end of which period, people will vote for a new president.
