DUSHANBE, October 13, 2010, Asia-Plus — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ERBD) is considering the possibility of supporting modernization of Dushanbe’s trolleybus stock.
According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) press service, this issues was discussed here yesterday at a meeting of Minister of Economic Development and Trade Farrukh Hamraliyev with Mr. Ulf Hindstrom, Head of the EBRD Resident Office in Dushanbe.
The sides also discussed issues related to the prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the Bank and the current economic situation and development of the business environment in Tajikistan.
Hamraliyev and Hindstrom, in particular, exchanged views on Tajikistan’s laws regulating leasing activity, development of private sector, as well as support for financial sector and the national currency
In Tajikistan, the EBRD focuses its activities on developing the banking sector, improving municipal infrastructure, promoting micro and SME business mostly in the agribusiness sector, and on farm credit. The power sector and energy efficiency will be new focus areas.
In 2009 the Bank invested €21.8 million in Tajikistan, the largest share of which went to the finance sector, followed by agribusiness and municipal infrastructure.
In 2010 the Bank aims to further promote recovery and sustainable growth in Tajikistan by continuing to support the agricultural and banking sectors, by adding new partner banks for TAFF and the Trade Facilitation Program (TFP) and increased micro and small business lending. Rehabilitation of the power generation infrastructure and energy efficiency programs will be new focus areas.
