KHUJAND, October 13, 2010, Asia-Plus — Officers from the Istaravshan police department have detained local resident for illegal storage of weapons and explosives, the Sughd prosecutor Yusuf Rahmonov told reporters in Khujand on October 12.

According to him, two Walter pistols with 200 bullets as well as explosives and 100 detonators were found in the house of the detainee, whose name is not disclosed in the interest of investigation.

In all, Istaravshan law enforcement authorities have seized 235 firearms over the first nine months of this year, including 15 pistols and four Kalashnikov assault rifles.     

Rahmonov added that 14 other persons had been detained on suspicion of having been involved in a suicide bomb attack in Khujand. 

We will recall that the department of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) in Sughd province announced on October 5 that Akmal Karimov, whom it identified as a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), carried out the suicide bomb attack in Khujand on September 3 that killed four police officers and injured 26.  Security officials noted that three suspects had been detained during an investigation.  One of them is Firdavs Karimov, the suspected suicide bomber”s brother.
