DUSHANBE, October 14, 2010, Asia-Plus — Deterioration of the situation in northern Afghanistan may lead to spillover of violence into Tajikistan.
Abdunabi Sattorov, the head of the foreign policy and foreign economic development department within the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Tajikistan, remarked this at a news conference in Dushanbe on October 14.
According to him, the situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating day by day and the current situation in the northern part of this country is becoming too tense that may provoke the Taliban to break through.
“Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s peace plan is not so encouraging though the Afghan peace council was set up and Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani was elected to head it,” said the expert, “The negotiations between the sides are making difficult progress.”
Sattorov attributes the deterioration of the situation in northern Afghanistan to change in routes for shipment of supplies for NATO-led collation antiterrorist forces in Afghanistan.
“They had previously shipped supplies for international antiterrorist forces through southern and southwest borders, while the itinerary was changed later as northern territories of Afghanistan are more safe,” said Sattorov, “Realizing the reason for change in the itinerary, the Taliban now try to attack the coalition forces in the north of the country.”
