KHUJAND, October 26, 2010, Asia-Plus  — A senior officer from the Bobojonghafurov police department, Sughd province has got a long jail term for bribery.

The Khujand city court sentenced Manouchehr Safarov, the deputy chief of the investigation squad within the Bobojonghafurov police department, to eight years in prison last week.  The sentenced followed his conviction on charges of bribe taking.

The source at the Sughd anticorruption directorate says Safarov headed a special commission to investigate criminal case instituted against local resident Azim Odinayev, who was detained in Khujand on August 27, 2009 for drug pushing.  “Safarov demanded 3,000 U.S. dollars from Odinayev’s relatives for softening charges brought against Odinayev,” the source said.

According to him, criminal proceedings against Safarov were instituted by the Sughd anticorruption directorate following an application by Odinayev’s brothers.
