DUSHANBE, June 19, 2013, Asia-Plus – An official handover ceremony for the project aimed at improving drinking water supply system in the Hamadoni district was held at the Moskva Township, the administrative center of the Hamadoni district on June 19.

According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, the ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Ms. Qurbonova, Deputy Chairman of Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, Mr. Shoyev, Ambassador of Embassy of Japan in Tajikistan, Mr. Imahashi, Resident Representative of JICA Tajikistan Office, Mr. Iida, and other officials.

The project for the improvement of water supply system in the Hamadoni district of Khatlon province consists of provision of equipment, construction of 3 boreholes and technical support to the team, as well as construction works at the waterworks of the Moskva Township and in two villages of Mehnatobod Jamoat (submersible pump facilities, high-elevated water tank, well pump control house, piping and appurtenance facilities, water distribution facilities and etc), and capacity enhancement on Operation and Maintenance of water supply facility.  This project supports the program for improvement of safe drinking water (2007 – 2020) in the Hamadoni area, and direct beneficiary of this project is estimated at more than 20,000 people.

The project was reportedly implemented under grant aid of the Government of Japan.  Japan allocated the budget of JPY 955 million for Phase I and JPY 779 million for the Phase II of the Project.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) started providing technical assistance to Tajikistan in 1991, and Representative Office of JICA in Tajikistan was established in 2006.  The aggregate amount of grant aid provision is 214.34 million USD as of 2011 (39.00 million U.S. dollars in 2010 and 18.9 million in 2011), and the total amount of the provision of technical assistance is 55.6 million USD as of 2011 (4.11 million U.S. dollars in 2010 and 4.35 million U.S. dollars in 2011) by JICA to Tajikistan.
