DUSHANBE, November 14, 2013, Asia-Plus — The process of ratification of an agreement on the rules of stay of Tajik citizens in Russia by the State Duma (Russia’s lower chamber of parliament) has reportedly entered the final stage.

“The agreement provides for extending the period for registration for Tajik nationals on their arrival in Russia from seven to fifteen days, and we hope that the agreement will be ratified in the near future,” Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan, Igor Lyakin-Frolov, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

We will recall that the government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Russia on the rules of stay of Tajik citizens in Russia was signed in Moscow on February 8, 2013.

Russian diplomat also noted that Tajik citizens are now eligible to obtain three-year work permits in Russia.

The document changing the regulation from the current one-year maximum was signed by Safialo Devonayev, the chief of the Tajik migration service agency, and Konstantin Romodanovsky, the director of Russia”s Federal Migration Service (FMS), in Moscow on October 29.

Thousands of Tajik migrant workers travel to Russia every year for seasonal work as unemployment remains high in Tajikistan.
