DUSHANBE, September 30, 2014, Asia-Plus — The Islamic Revival Party (IRP) board held a meeting in Dushanbe on September 28 to discuss issues related to preparations for the 2015 parliamentary elections in the country.
“The meeting discussed participation of our party in the upcoming elections,” Mahmoudjon Fayzrahmonov, a spokesman for the IRP, told Asia-Plus in an interview.
According to him, the IRP decided to hold its pre-election congress on December 16.
“We also discussed the issue of creation of a collation for the 2015 parliamentary elections, but we have decided to participate in the elections independently,” said Fayzrahmonov. “However, it does not mean that we will not cooperate with other political parties.”
“The meeting participants analyzed the current situation in the country and came to a conclusion that the situation is less democratic compared to 2010,” noted the IRP spokesman. “To prevent any possible pressure we have trained our activists in modern propaganda technologies. We have also intensified the work of the party agitation department.”
Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991. It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999. Its official newspaper is
Najot
(Salvation). According to some source, the IRP now has some 50,000 members. It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections. The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia. Current chairman of the IRP is Muhiddin Kabiri.
Women reportedly constitute more than 51 percent of the Islamic Revival Party members.
