DUSHANBE, July 28, 2015, Asia-Plus — Russian Air Force has reportedly airlifted more than 4 to of humanitarian aid to the mudslide-affected areas of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

According to the Russian Central Military District’s website, transport helicopters of the Russian Central Military District have shipped more than 4 tons of humanitarian aid to Qalai Khumb, the administrative center of the Darvoz district and the city of Khorog, the capital of Gorno Badakhshan.

Mudslides and floods caused by melting glaciers and torrential rains this month have destroyed dozens of houses and damaged buildings, electricity lines, and irrigation canals in mountain areas of Tajikistan. The families (totaling more than 1,000 people) whose houses have been destroyed were moved to a temporary tented camp.

The mudslides have killed at least seven people: six in GBAO’s Vanj district and one in the Rasht district (eastern Tajikistan).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan says the damages caused by the mudslides and floods to various regions of the country were estimated at 100 million U.S. dollars.
