DUSHANBE, August 11, 2016, Asia-Plus – President Emomali Rahmon yesterday afternoon met here with Mohammad Hanif Atmar, National Security Advisor to the President of Afghanistan.
According to the Tajik president’s official website, the meeting focused on issues related to bilateral cooperation between the two countries in combating terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking as well as strengthening border security.
The two sides reportedly also exchanged views on measures to regulate activities of border-crossing points, intensify coordination between the border troops of the two countries, and expand ties between the security agencies of Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
Tajik president, in particular, noted that the main criterion ensuring further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan was the principle of good-neighborliness and added that cooperation with Afghanistan was one of priorities of Tajikistan’s foreign policy.
Mohammad Hanif Atmar (born 1968), who is currently serving as National Security Advisor to Ashraf Ghani the President of Afghanistan, was the Interior Minister of Afghanistan in the Hamid Karzai cabinet. He was removed from MoI by Hamid Karzai in the wake of attacks on the June 2010 Afghan Peace Jirga. Before that he worked with several international humanitarian organizations and served as Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development and Minister of Education. In 2011, he is part of the Right and Justice party.
