Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev is being examined by doctors for potential heart problems, Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported on September 20.

Almazbek Atambayev is currently at a hotel of Turkish Izmir.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Kyrgyz president felt unwell and complained of chest pains at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, on his way from Bishkek to New York for a UN General Assembly.  He was immediately examined by medics, it said.

Anadolu Agency said "during the night Atambayev arrived by plane at the airport of Izmir, from where he headed to a hotel in Cesme".  The president of Kyrgyzstan is still staying at the hotel with an ambulance car parked near it, the news agency said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Kyrgyz president’s office says Atambayev is not expected to return to work before October 1.

Kyrgyz president’s chief of staff, Farid Niyazov, described Atambayev’s condition as satisfactory.

Kyrgyz president’s press service announced on September 19 that the president had canceled a trip to New York to attend the UN General Assembly after suffering “chest pains” during the flight.

It said that “according to the doctors' preliminary conclusion” Atambayev was found to have symptoms of heart problems.

Almazbek Atambayev,60, has led Kyrgyzstan since 2011.
