The U.S. and British embassies in Bishkek have warned their citizens about possible terrorist acts in Kyrgyzstan that may take place in Kyrgyzstan this month.

The U.S. Embassy in Bishkek on October 8 issued a security message regarding “the possibility of terrorist attacks, which may potentially involve kidnapping and hostage taking, targeted against local authorities and foreign diplomats during the month of October in the Kyrgyz Republic.”

“While there are no specific threats against U.S. citizens or interests, the Embassy would like to take this opportunity to remind U.S. citizens living and traveling in the Kyrgyz Republic “to practice good personal security habits including exercising vigilance when in public places or using mass transportation.”

The Embassy has also advised U.S. travelers to be aware of their immediate surroundings and avoid crowded places, and always follow the instructions of local authorities, especially in an emergency, and monitor the media and local event information sources to ensure they are aware of any potential security situations.

Following the United States, the United Kingdom warned its citizens about the increased threat of terrorist attacks and kidnappings against the local authorities and foreign diplomats in Kyrgyzstan.

They also note that there is no specific data about the danger to British nationals, but ask to remain vigilant and stay away from crowded places.

Citizens who intend to visit Osh, Batken and Jalal-Abad regions shall be especially careful, the security message says.  The report noted that the Kyrgyz border with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan could be closed without notice.

Citizens of the United Kingdom are asked to always carry passport or a notarized copy, as well as to buy health insurance before traveling to Kyrgyzstan.
