Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday met in the Kazakh capital of Astana with his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to discuss cooperation.
According to the Tajik president’s official website, the meeting focused on the situation in Afghan areas bordering Tajikistan, security challenges and their management in border areas.
Rahmon, in particular, noted that Tajikistan supported constructive initiatives of international community aimed at providing sustainable peace and economic reconstruction of Afghanistan and considered cooperation with Afghanistan as one of priorities of its foreign policy.
The presidents reportedly exchanged views on many-sided cooperation between their countries, particularly in the fields of strengthening border management and providing security in border areas.
Rahmon and Ghani also discussed participation of Tajikistan and Afghanistan in implementation of small and large regional energy and transportation projects.
They underlined the necessity of expanding cooperation in combating international terrorism and extremism, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.
The presidents also pointed to the necessity of intensifying work of the joint intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation, implementing energy and infrastructure development programs, including construction of railway, organization of exhibition and mutual visits of entrepreneurs and investors.
