Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s state-owned power utility company) says its receivables have increased by nearly 140 million somoni in six months to June 30, 2019, reaching 2.5 billion somoni (equivalent to some 265 million U.S. dollars).

Press release issued by Barqi Tojik notes that the most incorrigible nonpayers are the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation, which now owes 163 million somoni to Barqi Tojik, dehqon farms – 175 million somoni, federally funded institutions – 60 million somoni, the State Unitary Enterprise (SUE) Khojagii Manziliyu Kommunali (KMK — housing and communal services) – 40 million somoni, and JV Tojikkimiyosanoat (Tajik chemical industry) – 25 million somoni.

Tajik power utility company had earlier noted that as of January 1, 2019, residential customers’ electricity debts amount to some 1 billion somoni.

Over the first six months of this year, Tajikistan has supplied 1.257.4 billion kWh of electricity to neighboring countries, which was 317.4 million kWh more than in the same period last year.

Tajikistan has earned 230 million somoni (equivalent to some 25 million USD) from supplying electric power to the neighboring countries in January-June this year.

Tajikistan exports surplus electricity to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan mainly during the summer period.  This year, Tajikistan is expected to supply more than 3.2 billion kWh of electricity to the neighboring countries.

Tajikistan has sufficient summer-time (defined as May 1 to September 30) hydropower surpluses to export to the neighboring countries.  Tajikistan is reportedly able to export up to 5 billion kWh of electricity during the summer period.

Barqi Tojik is fully owned by the Government.  It owns and operates most of the electricity generating plants and is also responsible for electricity transmission, dispatch, and distribution services to around 8 million people in all regions of the country except for the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).  Pamir Energy Company (PEC) generates and supplies electricity to around 200,000 people in the region.

It is to be noted that Tajikistan’s power utility company is now in a difficult financial state.  As of January 1, 2019, Barqi Tojik’s total debts reportedly amounted to 23.1 billion somoni (equivalent to about 2.5 billion U.S. dollars).
