QURGHON TEPPA, December 18, 2013, Asia-Plus — 114 suicide cases have been registered in the southern province of Khatlon since the beginning of this year; in 38 cases, persons who attempted suicide survived, Yusuf Obidov, an official with the Interior Ministry’s office in Khatlon, told Asia-Plus Wednesday afternoon.

Men have reportedly committed suicide in 38 cases, women have committed suicide in 76 cases, and minors have committed suicide in 28 cases.  

According to Obidov, suicides have shown upward trend in Jilikul – 12 cases, Bokhtar, Danghara, Vose and Rumi –  eight cases each, Qumsangir – seven cases, Qurghon Teppa and Shahritous – six cases each, and Temourmalik – five cases.

The listed causes of suicide were mental diseases (35), family problems (46), and unknown (33), Khatlon police official noted.

During a meeting with Bokhtar administrators, Khatlon governor Davlatsho Gulmahmadov expressed concern over increasing number of suicides in the province and ordered local authorities to take measures to stem an increase in the number of suicides in the area.
