Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has had phone talks with his Tajik counterpart Sirojiddin Muhriddin to review issues of being of mutual interest, Iranian state-run news agency IRNA reported on August 1.

During a telephone conversation that took place yesterday, Iranian Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian reportedly referred to the friendly and deep-rooted ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Tajikistan, adding that a new chapter of comprehensive cooperation in Iran-Tajikistan relations has been formed and this growing trend should continue.

Describing the visit of the Iranian president to Dushanbe and the reciprocal visit of the president of Tajikistan to Tehran as two significant turning points in relations between the two countries, the top Iranian diplomat noted that since the 13th government took office in Iran, a significant number of joint cooperation documents have been signed, which should be implemented through the follow-up of the two governments.

Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, for his part, reportedly expressed his satisfaction with the friendly relations between Iran and Tajikistan, emphasizing the further development of close and high-level relations between the two friendly and brotherly countries.

According to IRNA, he conveyed the greetings of the Tajik president to the Iranian president and stressed the official invitation of President Raisi to visit Dushanbe.

Relationships between Tajikistan and Iran have been growing since 1991, and many political experts believe that the developing relationship has its roots in long-standing cultural, religious and historical commonalities.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the two countries have naturally enjoyed a close and strong relationship with the two often being described as "one spirit in two bodies" by the ex-president of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad due to both being Persian-speaking and Iranic countries

Iran was the first nation to establish an embassy in Dushanbe.  It was also one of the first countries to extend diplomatic recognition of the newly independent Tajikistan in 1991.

Relations between Tajikistan and Iran chilled to a certain extent in 2017.  In recent years, the two states have been practically engaged in an active revival of bilateral cooperation in all fields.  On May 30, 2022, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon arrived in Tehran on an official visit.  President Rahmon was accompanied by a large delegation.  The official visit of the Tajik President was preceded by a meeting of Tajikistan’s deputy foreign minister with the Iranian foreign minister.  The visit included the meeting of the Presidents of the two countries Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi and Emomali Rahmon, as well as bilateral meetings of ministers and heads of relevant committees.  This event certainly could be described as a landmark visit because the previous visit of Emomali Rahmon to the Islamic Republic of Iran was made nine years ago.  At the end of a high-profile meeting co-chaired by Presidents Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi and Emomali Rahmon, it was concluded that the sides had signed 17 documents on cooperation in a wide range of fields.

On June 13, 2022, authorities of the two countries organized a Tajikistan-Iran Tourism Forum aimed at developing tourism between the two countries.  On June 21, 2022, Iran and Tajikistan held a Joint Security Task Force in Dushanbe which was attended by officials from the interior ministries of both countries. The joint security task force is meant to coordinate actions of the two nations against terrorism, organized crimes, and drug trafficking and help counter the threats from common enemies.

The two countries are currently engaged in close cooperation practically in all areas.
