DUSHANBE, April 24, 2001, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan is deeply disturbed by events in neighboring Kyrgyzstan, President Rahmon noted on April 24 while making an annual address to parliament.

He noted that the Tajik people had gone through such events and knew their worth.  He wished the Kyrgyz people speedy normalization of the situation and noted that Tajikistan has not changed its policy and was ready for mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation with all countries of the region.

“We just must have good faith in order turn this region into an area of constructive cooperation, friendly dialogue and efficient ties,” President Rahmon said.

“We intend to strengthen and expand cooperation, first of all, with Central Asia’s countries and Russia who are our strategic partners,” said the Tajik head of state, “Besides, Tajikistan will expand cooperation with the United States, France, Germany and other advanced countries of the world.  We will also expand good relations with Muslim, Arab countries and other regions of the world, including Iran, Afghanistan, India, Turkey, Pakistan and Japan.”
