Dushanbe. June 16. “Asia-Plus” — Russia has canceled its ban on import of dried fruits and walnuts from Tajikistan, Interfax quotes Head of the Russian Consumer Protection Service, Chief Sanitary Doctor of Russia, Gennady Onishenko, as saying.

According to Onishenko, the corresponding order on removal of the ban was issued to territorial departments of the Consumer Control Service on June 15. “In reality, the ban will be completely removed on Thursday,” he said.

Russia banned import of dried fruits and walnuts from Tajikistan on May 5 this year due to polio outbreak in the republic.

Consumer Protection Service of Russia said dried fruits and walnuts, which are used without additional processing, may contain the polio virus. “This ban, which lasted for half a month, has played its role. We have managed to prevent mass import and distribution of poliomyelitis,” Onishenko has said.

Apart from ban on imports of nuts and dried fruits, Russian chief consumer protection service has introduced a special sanitary monitoring regime for all air planes and trains arriving from Tajikistan. Russia also introduced travel ban for Tajik children at the age of 6 travelling to Russia. According to Onishenko, these bans will also be removed soon.
