DUSHANBE, September 18, 2010, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon today departed for New York to attend the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to presidential press service, Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi, State Adviser to the President for International Issues Erkin Rahmatulloyev and the First Deputy Foreign Minister Abdullo Yuldoshev are accompanying the president on this trip.         

The 65th Ordinary Session of the United Nations opened on September 14.  General debate runs on September 23-25 and September 27-30.  Sustained economic growth and sustainable development top the debate’s agenda.  A review of UN peacekeeping operations and of UN efficiency is also listed for debate.  Other expected topics are Iran”s refusal to halt uranium enrichment and Israel”s May 31 raid on Gaza-bound aid boats.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon will also attend the second summit on inter-religious dialogue and cooperation for peace that will take place in New York on September 23 on sidelines of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly.

Tajik leader will deliver a statement at the summit that is expected to bring together a number of heads of state as well as world religious and political leaders to consider issues related to tolerance, non-discrimination and dialogue of civilizations, the source said.

The first summit on inter-religious dialogue and cooperation for peace took place in New York in October 2007 on sidelines of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly.

During his stay in New York, Tajik leader is also scheduled to hold a number of bilateral talks with a number of heads of international organizations and countries.

Emomali Rahmon is expected to hold talks with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and top managers of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).  President Rahmon will also hold talks with Dr. Ekmeliddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
