QURGHON TEPPA, October 9, 2010, Asia-Plus — Panj district in Khatlon province is the first in Tajikistan to fulfill its cotton target.

According to Mahmadsaid Zuhurov, the head of the agriculture department within the Khatlon governor’s office, Pang cotton growers have yielded 8,500 tons of cotton by October 9, which is 100 percent of their target.

“Shahritus district is also expected to fulfill its cotton target today,” said Zuhurov, “Besides, four other cotton producing districts in Khatlon – Qumsangir, Bokhtar, Vakhsh and Sarband – have also pledged to fulfill their cotton target until October 15.”

By October 8, Khatlon province has reached 85 percent of its cotton target that has been determined at 194,000 tons of raw cotton.

“We hope our province will fulfill its cotton target this year,” said Zuhurov, “Agricultural reforms have yielded good results.  Farming units are interested in growing cotton.  The rise in international cotton prices, favorable conditions and free choice of a buyer have encouraged local farmers to yield more cotton.”
