DUSHANBE, March 27, Asia-Plus  — Warmer temperatures have caused snow-slides in mountain areas, an official source at the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES) told Asia-Plus Tuesday afternoon.

According to him, dozens of snow-slides have occurred across the country over the past several days.

The largest damage has been caused to the village of Vrang in the Ishkashim district, Gorno Badakhshan.  “An avalanche that occurred there on March 25 completely destroyed two residential buildings and partially damage six other residential buildings,” said the source.  “Local school was also seriously damaged by the avalanche.”

On March 26, a series of avalanches blocked in some places roads from Khorog, the administrative center of Gorno Badakhshan, to the Murgab district and Dushanbe.

Specialists note warmer temperatures have increased the risk of further avalanches in Tajikistan and people are advised not to travel unnecessarily.
