DUSHANBE, July 26, 2013, Asia-Plus – Number of women involved in prostitution is reportedly growing in Tajikistan.

1,597 women involved in prostitution (47 of them are underage girls) have been reported in Tajikistan over the first six months of this year, which is 248 women more than in the same period last year, Ms. Sumangul Taghoyeva, Chairperson of the Committee for Family and Women Affairs under the Government of Tajikistan announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 26.

“Mainly, these women come to Dushanbe from districts subordinate to the center.  We frequently make raids jointly with representatives of the Ministry of Interior and the Committee for Youth, Sports and Tourism Affairs to reveal such women,” said Taghoyeva.  “Besides, we raise this issue at all meetings with women we hold in districts and cities.”

During such meetings, they reportedly offer women to take vocational training courses so that they could earn their living.

Ms. Taghoyeva also noted that the center to support underage violence victims functioned at the Committee for Family and Women Affairs.

Meanwhile, according to the statistical data from the Committee for Family and Women Affairs, 470 more HIV sufferers, including 182 women and 54 children under the age of 14, have been registered in the country over the first six months of this year, which is 21 cases more than in the same period last year.
