DUSHANBE, December 27, 2013, Asia-Plus — On Thursday December 26, Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador of Japan to Tajikistan, and Mr. Boboali Tabarov, Chairperson of Tursunzoda District attended the handover ceremony to mark the successful implementation of the “The Project of Provision of School Equipment to Six Secondary Schools in Tursunzoda City”.

According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, the project was funded within the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for the Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) with the amount of US$ 108,910.

Shortage of proper school equipment is considered as one of the major concerns in many schools in Tajikistan.  In some schools, shortage of desks and chairs is severe that three students are forced to squeeze into chairs that are built for two students. Reading and copying text from worn-out blackboards is not easy and can be a distraction to students in their studies.

With the aim to provide students with best possible education environment, through this project, 900 sets of desks and chairs, 60 blackboards and 60 bookshelves, in total, have been distributed to six different secondary schools, many of which were built around 40 years ago and had been suffering from lack of school equipment.

The students are now studying in suitable environment for education that they deserve. Education is fundamental rights for all human beings, and the importance of education should not be undervalued for any reason.  GGP regards education as a true asset to the development and the growth of the nation. Japanese Government will continue to provide support for the improvement of education sector in Tajikistan.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries.  GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  As of today, GGP has supported 307 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan, for which more than US$ 23.9 million has been provided since 1996.
