Interior ministry blames short circuit for a fire that broke out at the Korvon Bazaar, Dushanbe’ largest wholesale market, yesterday evening.

According to information posted on the Interior Ministry’s website, the blaze engulfed more than 480 square meters of the market late on July 2.

The Interior Ministry says an electric short circuit was the cause of the fire that broke out the Korvon Bazaar yesterday evening.

Twenty-eight firefighting crews were reportedly involved in extinguishing the yesterday’s fire at the Korvon Bazaar.  No injured was reported.

This is at least the sixth fire to ravage Korvon in less than a decade.  The last fire was on September 2012. According to some sources, more than 1,000 vendors were ruined by the 2012 blaze, which left one person dead.  The previous blaze was in 2010, but it was half the size.

The Korvon Bazaar occupies the space of some 14,000 square meters.  A total damage caused to the market by the previous five blazes has been estimated at about 3.5 million U.S. dollars.
