Tajik tax authorities have named Barqi Tojik (the state-owned utility responsible for generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Tajikistan) as the country’s largest tax defaulter.

Chairman of the Tax Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, Nusratullo Davlatzoda, told reporters in Dushanbe on July 21 that Barqi Tojik’s tax debts have exceeded 186 million somoni.

Barqi Tojik is a national integrated power company of Tajikistan. It operates the Nurek Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest station in Central Asia with an installed generation capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW), which produces over 75% of Tajikistan’s electricity.

“Among the top ten tax defaulters are also Resandai Qurghon Teppa (17 million somoni), Olim Textiles (25.8 million somoni), Angishti Nazarayloq (8.1 million somoni) and some others,” Tajik tax chief officer noted.

According to him, the number of enterprises having large tax debts is increasing in the cuntry.  “Probably, global economic crisis has affected them,” Davlatzoda said.

Meanwhile, the tax collection target for the first six months of this year has been overfulfilled.  Tax officers have collected 4.5591 billion somoni over the report period, which is 2.1 million somoni more than it was originally planned (4.4663 billion somoni).
