Share of industry in Tajikistan’s GDP increasing

Over the first three months of this year, Tajikistan has produced about 6.8 billion somoni worth of industrial goods, which was 1.8 billion somoni more than in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies (MoINT).

An official source at a MoINT says compared to January-March last year the index of volume of production of industrial goods in the country has amounted to 116.9 percent.

According to him, the growth was achieved mainly due to increase in production and processing of raw materials and production of electricity, natural gas and heat.  

In the mining industry, metal ores accounted for more than 90 percent of the overall output produced over the report period.  Coal reportedly accounted for 4.3 percent, oil and natural gas accounted for 1.3 percent, and other minerals accounted for 3.8 percent.  

In the processing industry, food products, including drinks, accounted for some 32 percent of the overall volume of products manufactured in January-March this year.  Metals and metal products accounted for more than 31 percent, the source said.  

In January-March this year, Tajikistan has reportedly generated about 5.2 billion kWh of electricity and 477,000 gigacalories of heat.  

Thus, the share of industry in Tajikistan’s gross domestic product (GDP) has increased from 19.8 percent in January-March 2019 to 20.4 percent in the first quarter of this year.
