Japan supports development projects in Rasht Valley

DUSHANBE, June 23, 2011, Asia-Plus – On June 21 and 22, Mr. Yoshihiro Nakayama, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, Mr. Saidumron Abdurahmonov, Chairman of Rasht District, and Mr. Himmatsho Ghayratov, Chairman of Tavildara District, attended the handover ceremonies in the districts of Rasht and Tavildara.

Japan granted US$ 269,545 for three projects: one in educational sector in Rasht district and two in agrarian sector in Tavildara district.

According to the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe, “The Project for Provision of School Equipment in Rasht District” with total amount of US$ 95,809 was successfully completed in the framework of the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP).  Due to shortage of basic educational equipment such as desks, chairs and blackboards, 3-4 students had to share a set of desk and chair for 2 students in many schools in Rasht district.  The condition has severely affected quality of education in the district. Through the project, 62 schools which were lacking in educational equipment, were equipped with 1,163 sets of desk and chair and 109 blackboards in total.  More than 13,400 students studying in those schools are able to have access to better educational environment with the newly provided equipment.

The Government of Japan has granted US$91,574 for “The Project for Rehabilitation of Irrigation Canal in Sari Jangal Village, Tavildara Jamoat, Tavildara District.”  Through the project, a 4.4-kilometer canal was rehabilitated in order to irrigate 50 hectares of agricultural land in the mountainous area.  After the project implementation, a variety of vegetables and fruits can be cultivated in the newly irrigated agricultural lands.  Enhanced agricultural productivity in the area will increase income of local population and, consequently, life condition of population in Tavildara district will be improved.

“The Project for Nutrition Improvement in Tavildara District” with the total amount of US$82,162 aimed at improvement of food security by ensuring agricultural productivity in Tavildara district.  As one of the first introductions of greenhouse technology to the target areas, four greenhouses (164.sq.m each: a total of 656sq.m) were constructed with reinforced bricks in Shahrinav and Childara villages.  The greenhouses provide a suitable environment for growing vegetables throughout the year so that the local population can acquire access to nutrient foods even in the winter.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries.  GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  GGP has extended more than US$ 19.3 million for 267 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan since 1996.
