DUSHANBE, March 5, 2010, Asia-Plus  — More than 60 vehicles have reportedly been trapped by a series of avalanches that hit the Maikhoura area, some 65 kilometer north of Dushanbe.

According to the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), a series of avalanches hit the Maikhoura area yesterday evening, blocking the highway from Dushanbe to Khujand.  “More than 60 vehicles were trapped by the avalanches,” the source said, noting that no injured was reported.

“The CES rescuers were sent to the avalanche site, where they together with specialists from the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) are clearing snow from the mountain road,” the source said.

We will recall that abrupt rise in spring temperatures  trigged a series  avalanches in Gorno Badakhshan this week, killing three people.
