Japan supports awards grants to Tajikistan for rehabilitation of medical facilities

DUSHANBE, March 19, 2010, Asia-Plus  — According to the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe today at 11:00 am, with the presence of Mr. Sohibnazar Rahmonov, Deputy Health Minister, Mr. Yoshihiro Nakayama, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe the Republic of Tajikistan will sign grant contracts with Mr. Mansur Qodirov, Chairman of Roudaki District, Mr. Shodikhon Jamshedov, Chairman of Shugnan District, Ms. Gulchehra Sadulloyeva, Deputy Chairperson of Ayni District, Mr. Umar Tohirov, Director of Republican Scientific Clinic Stomatology Center and Mr. Inomjon Haqnazarov, Director of Emergency Hospital in Kulob City.  The Government of Japan grants US$454,206 for the rehabilitation of five medical facilities.

Roudaki District receives US$ 95,776 for the rehabilitation of the Central Hospital under “The Project for Rehabilitation of Medical Facility for Infectious Diseases in Roudaki District”.

The Central Hospital in Roudaki District, which has the specialized department for infectious diseases, is located in Chorgulteppa Jamoat, which is 15 km far from Dushanbe and 1 km from the center of Roudaki District.

The project will rehabilitate the ward of Infectious Disease Department, refurnish the medical beds along with other furniture and install 7 medical equipment including ultrasound device. The project is expected to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in Roudaki District as well as neighboring districts surrounding the capital city-Dushanbe.

The Government of Japan allocates US$91,273 to Shugnan District for “The Project for Provision of Medical Equipment to the Central Hospital in Shugnan District”.

The Central Hospital in Shugnan District is the largest medical facility in the district, receiving 4,500 patients annually, however the hospital could not provide appropriate medical service due to the lack of sufficient medical equipment.  Through the implementation of the project, 14 medical equipment, including ultrasound device and gastro scope, will be provided to the Hospital.  The population of Shugnan District will be able to access proper diagnosis and medical treatment.

Ayni District receives US$89,503 for “The Project for Rehabilitation of the Regional Hospital No.1 in Anzob Jamoat, Ayni District”.  As a nearest medical facility to Istiqlol tunnel connecting Dushanbe and Khujand,

Regional Hospital No.1 in Anzob Jamoat is expected to take a major role for emergency medical services, traffic accidents, injured patients and other including 19,000 residents of the district.  The Hospital will be equipped with medical equipment such as electrocardiograph and gastro scope and other ordinal equipment.  The project also includes major renovation of the hospital infrastructure to meet modern hygienic standard.

In order to improve the treatment quality of cleft lip and palate defect, one of the congenital defects, US$86,703 will be provided to the Republican Scientific Clinic Stomatology Center under “The Project for Provision of Medical Equipment to the Stomatology Center in Dushanbe”.

Approximately 6,000 patients of cleft lip and palate defect are living and more than 200 newborn babies are born annually with the defect in Tajikistan.  Only the Stomatology Center has the department specialized in cleft lip and palate defect.

The project will replace old equipment with 13 stomatological equipment including dental drills, X-ray machine, anesthesia machine and stomatological surgery kit.  Early treatment with advanced equipment is expected to prevent linguistic and other sequelae of cleft lip and palate defect.

The Government of Japan allocates US$90,951 to Emergency Hospital of Kulob City for “The Project for Modernization of Emergency Medical Equipment in Kulob City” Equipped with an emergency call center and ambulances, the Hospital provides emergency medical service mainly for 180,000 residents of Kulob City area. The building was recently reconstructed, but lack of medical equipment has caused low capacity of emergency medical services.

The project will install 9 medical devices such as portable ultrasound device, and gastro scope for upgrading the emergency medical sector in Kulob Region.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. The GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries. The GGP has extended more than US$ 16.9 million for 250 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan since 1996.
