Tajik authorities have reportedly blocked 78 websites related to terrorist organizations and there ought not to visit them event secretly.

Specialized cybercrime units have been set up at the Interior Ministry organized crime control and criminal investigation departments

The Interior Minister Ramazon Rahimzoda told reporters on July 21 that the main task of the cybercrime units is to identify people trying to contact with terrorist organizations through e-mail and social networks.

“This year, these units have identified 137 nationals of Tajikistan who were in contact with terrorist organizations through social networks,” the minister noted.

According to him, 78 websites related to terrorist and extremist organizations have been blocked in the country this year.  Rahimzoda, however, refrained from naming them.

Recall, Tajikistan’s upper house (Majlisi Milli) of parliament on July 12 seconded an initiative of deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) to give law enforcement authorities the power to identify people suspected of visiting “undesirable” websites.

One deputy of the lower house, Jourakhon Majidzoda, suggested on June 7 that criminal investigators should be given the power to identify people suspected of visiting “undesirable” websites.

In support of his argument, MP Majidzoda claimed that people across Tajikistan are collectively being bombarded with up to 90,000 SMS messages every day from supposed extremists and terrorists.

According to him, the messages include appeals to join forces with radical groups based abroad.

The parliamentarian also claimed that out of more than 3 million Tajiks who now have access to the Internet, more than 80 percent visit websites containing extremist and terrorist content.
