Prices for some basic food products have risen in Tajikistan.  Thus, prices for flour, meat and sugar rose in the country last month.

First grade wheat flour prices reportedly rose 1.3 percent in May.  The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) press center reports that according to data of the World Bank, the flour prices have shown upward tendency since the beginning of the year.  In April, the price of one ton of wheat flour was 213.00 U.S> dollars, 16.1-percent increase compared with the beginning of the year. 

According to the Data of the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, current prices for one kilogram of the first grade wheat flour are 2.90 somoni in Dushanbe, 2.86 somoni in Tursunzoda, 3.10 somoni in Rasht, 2.80 somoni in Bokhtar, 2.90 somoni in Kulob, 2.64 somoni in Khujand, 2.60 somoni in Istaravshan and 3.30 somoni in Khorog.   

Bread, made with wheat flour, is the main staple food in the country.  According to data from the CIS Interstate Statistical Committee (CIS-Stat), each Tajikistani consumes more than 150 kilograms of wheat flour per year.  

By comparison, an average annual potato consumption per capita in Tajikistan is estimated at 40 kilograms, an average annual vegetable consumption per capita – 80 kilograms, an average annual meat consumption per capita – 15 kilogram, an average annual milk and dairy product consumption per capita – 60 kilograms, and an average annual sugar consumption per capita – 15 kilograms.
