Tajik President Emomali Rahmon addressed a joint meeting of both chambers of the parliament today morning.

A joint meeting of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) and the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) took place at the Kokhi Somon State Complex in Dushanbe.

Heads of all provinces, cities and districts as well as ministries and agencies also attended the meeting.

As usual, in his address to the parliament, the president discussed the country’s priorities in domestic politics and foreign policy as well as the main economic challenges.

All Tajik national television and radio channels broadcast the president’s annual address.  Students of higher educational institutions as well as senior students of high schools were gathered in their institutions’ auditoriums to watch president’s annual address.

Speaking at the meeting, Tajik leader, in particular, highlighted the main achievements obtained by Tajikistan in the passing year.

Among them, Rahmon named introduction of the first unit of the Roghun hydropower plant into operation, improvement of relations with Uzbekistan and United Nation’s support for Tajikistan’s ‘water’ initiative.

Tajik leader noted that introducing the first unit of the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP) into operation was a step towards achievement of country’s energy independence.

Reestablishment of friendly relations with Uzbekistan is another historic event in the passing year, Rahmon noted.

The president further noted that the year-on-year rate of growth of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) this year would stand at 7.3 percent, and the year-on-year inflation rate this year would stand at 5.4 percent.

More than 150,000 new jobs have reportedly been created in the country this year and the number of Tajik nationals leaving the country for seeking better employment opportunities has decreased by 25 percent over the past three years.

This year, population’s money incomes have increased by 11 percent compared to 2017, the president said.
