The construction and operation of cascade hydropower stations in mountain regions is safe. Such conclusion made the participants of the International scientific-practical conference “Seismic safety of the countries of Central Asia,” held last week in Dushanbe.

“Based on the results of performed and ongoing researches, to inform decision makers and the population in the region that the construction of hydropower plants and their operation does not pose a threat,” – said in a resolution adopted by scientists on the results of the conference.

The participants recommend all governmental and non-governmental, construction and other organizations working in this direction, to use the results of scientific research institutes into practice.

The resolution is calling upon to help to unite the efforts of scientists and specialists to exchange seismic data as well as in the Central Asian region and international centers in order to reduce the risk of potential local and transboundary earthquakes.

Also resolution is calling upon to assist in the construction of the regional center for the collection, storage and sharing of data and so on.

“The implementation of these measures will help to minimize the amount of damage and losses in the event of emergencies,” say the scientists of Central Asia.

Conference participants have further resolved: to ask donors and international organizations to support projects and programs aimed at the modernization of existing seismic networks and seismic risk reduction; to underscore the importance of further research along these lines.
